Nanning : India had never reached beyond the quarterfinal rounds of the Sudirman Cup, but this time the Indian contingent is heading to Nanning in search of their first ever Sudirman Cup medal. India reached the quarterfinals of the 2017 edition of the tournament by causing an upset by defeating the very first winners of the Cup, Indonesia very convincingly by 4-1. The Only match that India lost to Indonesia was the Men’s Doubles.
Unfortunately the knockout draw was not in favour of India where they faced the no. 1 seeds China and were knocked out 3-0. India has a very strong singles line up comprising the likes of Kidambi Srikanth, Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and Sameer Verma which is capable of grabbing two points against any opponent. The crucial part for winning the tie will be to win at least one doubles.
India did not have very good records in the doubles category but, right now India has also leveled up in the doubles category too. The performance of the team in the doubles category is dependent on Satwik Sai raj who will play two crucial doubles matches in form of Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
On paper China is better than India in each category and is expected to be the winning team of this title. Malaysia is expected to loose China in each of the 5 categories but India may cause threat to China in the Singles Discipline and with two singles on India’s side, scoreboard pressure can make the outcome against the 10 times champions.
Even if India puts it best bunch of players in all the five categories, the chances of qualifying for the knockouts is very ominous. India has have beaten Malaysia in the finals of the Commonwealth games 3-1, but most of the Indian players are either erratic or recovering from an injury. But, Indian players outperforms in the team events.
