Korea’s ace Women’s Singles player Sung Ji Hyun, withdrew from the upcoming Sudirman Cup citing a wrist injury. It is another big blow to the hopes of the defending champions, after Son Wan Ho withdrew due to knee surgery. Korea defeated 10 times champion China in last year’s final.
Sung played a very crucial role in Korea’s triumph to glory where she won the crucial point for her team in the finals. The 27 year old shuttler have a good amount of experience on her side and can defeat any of the top 10 players on her day. In her absence the Women’s Singles charge will be on Kim Ga Eun and 17 year old shutter An Se Young who won the New Zealand Open recently.
Sung Ji Hyun has played a key role in team events for the Korean team rather it be Uber Cup or Sudirman Cup. Well Sung’s absence may prove to be a blessing in disguise for the 17 year old An Se Young who is participating in her first Sudirman Cup. It will be a good exposure tournament for the teenager to nurture her talent for the coming years.
Men’s singles will not include the likes of Son Wan Ho, who is recovering from an injury. His possible return on the World Tour is expected to be in August or September. In his absence Lee Dong keun and Heo Kwang Hee will spearhead the men’s singles challenge.
Korea is sending a comparatively young and inexperienced contingent but still the Korean’s can’t be underestimated as the managed to win the last edition of Sudirman Cup in the absence of marky doubles players.
Korea is in group 1C along with Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong . It will be a difficult task for Korea to defeat Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong to reach the knockout draw.
