NANNING : The action of the Sudirman Cup 2019 day 1 began with Indonesia Vs England encounter. The highly experienced Indonesians were up against a comparatively weaker and inexperienced English side. On paper the outcome was quite clearly on the Indonesian side and so does it happened when Indonesia defeated their counterparts 4-1 in a convincingly fashion.
The very first match of the tie was Men’s Doubles in which the World No. 1 pair of Kevin Sanjaya /Gideon Fernaldi were up against the 2016 Rio Olympic Games bronze medalists Marcus Ellis/Chris Langridge. The Indonesians had a head to head record of 3-0 against their less fancied English opponents.
This time also the Indonesian pair just required only 39 minutes to demolish the English challenge. The first game was pretty one sided in which the English duo just managed to score 9 points in response to their opponents. The second game was a little neck to neck at the end ,but it wasn’t enough from the English side to force a decider and they lost by 21-9,21-18.
The second match was Women’s Singles which involved the former Junior World Champion Gregoria Mariska Tunjung ,who just took 23 minutes to beat Abigail Holden of England by 21-10,21-13. With a 2-0 lead over England, the Indonesians were high on confidence.
Then came the Men’s Singles match which features the World No. 7 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting against World No. 65 Toby Penty. Ginting showed that he is a player of different class and Toby had no answer to his accurate and decisive game play. Ginting is very fast on court and so did he proved it by finishing the match in a similar fashion in just 30 minutes.
Women’s Doubles was the fourth and the longest match of the tie which took 45 minutes to end. World No. 5 duo Greysia Polii / Apriyani Rahayu were up against Chloe Birch/ Lauren Smile. The English duo showed grit and determination throughout the match but couldn’t got better of the Indonesians.
The last and the Only match won by England was Mixed Doubles which features the pair of Chris Adcock / Gabby Adcock up against Praveen Jordon / Melati Daeva Oktavianti. The Adcocks were fierce and attacking throughout the match and never let Jordan and Oktavianti to get into lead. It just took 43 minutes to Adcocks to finish the match by 21-17,21-18 in their favour.
England will next be up against Denmark tomorrow, in a do or die situation. If England looses tomorrow, then they will have to fly back to London early. Denmark is in transition period specially in Doubles, so England can create an upset by defeating Denmark.
