CALGARY: India’s star shuttlers Kashyap Parupalli and Sourabh Verma were the only Indians left till the prequarterfinal stage. The Indian duo showed a determined performance to progress to the men’s singles quarterfinals of the USD 75000 Canada Open Super 100 tournament at Calgary.
The 2014 Commonwealth games gold medalist Kashyap Parupalli was seeded sixth in the tournament. He fought for an hour and 24 minutes before defeating China’s Ren Peng Bo 23-21, 21-23, 21-19 in a stiff contest. In another Men’s Singles encounter national champion Sourabh Varma eked out a 21-13, 15-21, 21-15 win over another Chinese Sun Fei Xiang in a match lasting 2 minutes over the hour mark.
Kashyap, who had reached the semifinals of India Open earlier this year, will take on France’s Lucas Claerbout while Sourabh will lock horns with Li Shi Feng of China in the quarterfinal clash.“Tough win today .. Happy to get through to the quarters,” Kashyap tweeted after the match.
Sourabh too was happy with his performance.“Quite happy with my performance today … executed the strategy well through out the match. Would like to thank amrishshinde for helping me from the sidelines,” Sourabh wrote on his twitter handle. Saurabh is struggling with bad form for quite a while and will surely be looking forward to end the same.
