Nanning : Sudirman Cup starts from 19 May to 26 May, at Nanning, China. All badminton powerhouse nations are gearing up to Claim the prestigious Sudirman Cup trophy. The tournament is being played since 1989 every odd year and is termed as the World Team Championships. The winner of this prestigious tournament will be crowned as the World Team Champions.
China has a great legacy of winning this tournament 10 times from 1995 to 2015, but in the last edition the underdogs Korea got the better of the Chinese no.1 seed team. Korea managed to pull out crucial wins in the doubles category irrespective of missing of big names in the doubles department . The final tie went of to last the match of mixed doubles featuring Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong of China and Choi Solgyu and Chae Yujung of Korea.
The Korean’s defeated their much fancied Chinese opponents and claimed their first ever title for their country. This time the focus is shifted to Japan which have a very strong line up for all the five categories. For the first time Japan is seeded no.1 in the Sudirman Cup ahead of the mighty China.
Japan is represented by world no.1 Kento Momota in the Men’s Singles category who is the best player on the circuit right now. In Women’s Singles Japan has two of the elite singles players Nozomi Okuhara and Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. Men’s Doubles challenge is spearheaded by Takeshi Kamuro and Kiego Sonoda and Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe.
Japan has 4 pairs in the top 10 in the Women’s Doubles category. This particular category is dominated by Japan in the world of badminton. Mixed doubles features world no. 3 pairing of Arisa Higashino and Yuta Watanabe.
With China and Japan being top contenders for the trophy, there are many underdogs in the tournament which may surprise China and Japan in the title run. Chinese Taipei and Indonesia are seeded 3 and 4, and may defeat any team on their day. Indonesia has strong MS, MD and XD and a formidable WD pair and may defeat any team on their day. Similarly, Chinese Taipei has strong WS, MS and MD and if these three performs on a given day, it will be enough for Chinese Taipei to win the Tie.
